the explanations

As "webmasters" we used the themes of the books as the main themes of our design. We chose to use the colour orange because it was very significant throughout the novel. We see the colour used in the novel first when the narrator heads to the future and talks to Pi and his daughter Usha. Usha is carrying around a small orange cat. This gives the reader a sense of hope, and lets them know that the story is not a complete tragedy. Orange after that is then used more frequently in the novel, such as with Richard Parker, the lifebuoy, whistle, and Orange Juice. The colour was seen to represent survival and hope.

We also used many pictures to help further the explanations of the blog entries. By posting the pictures along side the blog, we feel that it helps the reader understand the situation futher.
We used the Greek symbol "Pi" as the display picture because first of all it was his nickname, and second it shows how complicated and hard to comprehend his character is, just like the infinite number. It also shows the many layers his character has.

Communication is Key

After my disappointment from seeing the tanker pass things have not been going so well. I am near my last days, I can tell. No longer can I take care of Richard Parker or do my chores, I am too weak. We are both sinking fast into our deaths and I await my last breath. Good bye Richard Parker, now I am off to see my loving family. My life is in the hands of God who I love and whom is love. Since my pen has died I have no way to let out my thoughts and I feel so alone. Writing in my journal was my way of staying sane; through my stories. It was my communication since there was no one else around. I'm waiting to die now, but there is a voice that I have not heard before . My recent blindness has set me back, but I know there was no one else on the boat. The voice has a french accent and I am confused, but I don't care who it is I just want to keep talking. When the voice fades away I have a sickening feeling and then it hits me. I'm not mad, the voice is Richard Parker. That carnivorous rascal! I'm glad to finally be on speaking terms with a tiger.

Hope is a potent feeling... if only for a while

"Richard Parker a ship!" I have been at sea for many many days and finally I see hope in the distance! I is in the form of a tanker ship. I am overcome with joy. " We're saved! We've made it!" I cant control my excitement and laughter, the ship is going to bring me home. It's finally our time to be rescued and it has been such a long journey. My heart is full of hope and I thank you lord. The happiness I am feeling in this moment is greater than any happiness I have ever felt; it is the happiness of salvation. Then suddenly the bliss I was feeling is gone in an instant. To my horror the large, mountain like, oil tanker was not stopping! It was getting closer and closer and heading right for us. I had no time to shoot off a flare; I had to get the tiny raft out of its path of destruction. Just like that the amazing hope and excitement that I built up was gone and I was left with nothing once again. No family, no shelter, no food and no hope.

Survival of the Most Savage

It hit me as I saw the zebra lying helpless being eaten from the inside out. Orange Juice - my only sense of hope was almost a faint memory. I watch on as the hyena is devouring the weak. Richard Parker is merely observing almost as if waiting to take the dominance of the boat. But in these moments I realize how desperation leads to savagery. The animals have lost the sense of civilization the zoo had provided for them. Throughout the reenactment of the food chain I have learned the importance of dominance. I must learn to show that I am not a peace of meat, but rather a member of the community we have established. I must show the same savagery to survive.

The First Day of a Long Time

I remember the metallic burp and thinking about my family; as I snapped back into reality I saw the helpless Richard Parker. I yelled to him, he wouldn’t make it, he would drown. His movements were weak and he was hardly moving. Only his eyes were steadily on me. I wanted him to survive. I tossed him a lifebuoy and as soon as I did, I thought of what I have just done. Richard Parker is a 400-ish pound Royal Bengal Tiger. What was I doing? As I was contemplating my reasoning it was too late, he was already aboard the boat.

As I sit on the tarpaulin watching the nothingness, I spot a locker. A locker that cont
ains supplies? I start to wonder. I set my eyes on the contents of the locker, and I start to search for any obstacles. My eyes lead straight to Richard Parkers “den”. Though my fear was present my desperation for food and water took hold of my body and mind. I face my fears, yell to the heavens “God preserve me” and hope for the best. As I open the locker my feelings cannot be described but merely imagined. I take the precious water in my hands and pour the liquid life into my mouth. I think I will survive another day.
